A documentary presented by GO SLEEVES
Adaptive runner and GO Sleeves “Trail Blader” Zachary Friedley is on a mission to raise awareness and opportunities for adaptive athletes. This amazing story of humanity and vulnerability shows the common ground found between hardcore ultra-runners and adaptive amateurs – as they discover they are more-than-capable athletes.
Zachary Friedley was born missing his right leg above the knee and several fingers on his right hand. Using a prosthetic leg, he grew up playing baseball and even wrestling for his high school team. He struggled to find adaptive athletes to act as role models in the 80s and 90s, but his family didn’t use the word “disabled” in their home. Today, he works to inspire people of all abilities while advocating for adaptive athletes, welcoming them into outdoor sports to enjoy public lands and parks to their fullest.
The first-ever Born to Adapt event was held in Los Olivos, California in April 2022 where Zachary experienced his own transformation to become an adaptive trail runner at a Born to Run Ultra Endurance Race. Zachary designed and directed a trail running experience for a variety of adaptive athletes with a wide variety of running experience, abilities, limb differences, sight differences and usage of prosthetics or equipment. Some of these athletes had never been on a trail in their life.
The first Born to Adapt event succeeded in the inclusion of these newly-minted adaptive athletes into the trail running community in a beautiful environment full of love and support.
Zachary will be speaking and running throughout 2022 to embody the potential of adaptive runners participating in world-class trail running races, including:
